    First Day

        Elements of Power Converters: Transformers, switching elements, protection, control         and cooling.

        Circuit Configurations: Basic forms, single vs. double way configurations, ANSI         circuit numbers, inverter configurations.

        Basic Theory: Commutation groups, commutation process, development of line         waveforms, power factor, section currents.

        Efficiency and Losses: Loss elements, Testing for loss, loss calculations, standard         methods.



    Second Day

        Transformer Reliability: Transformer life vs. temperature, voltage environment,         moisture content of insulation, corona.

        Power Semiconductor Reliability: Failure rate vs. temperature, failure rate vs. voltage         stress, mounting problems and compounds.

        Control System Reliability: Failure rate vs. temperature, connectors, component         count, redundancy.

        Protection: AC protection, DC protection, Semiconductor protection, Electronic         protection, coordination with process, diagnostics.

        Specifications: Need and purpose for specifications, recommended spec. outline,         proper use of standards.


    Third Day

        Harmonics Generation: Classic harmonics from the ideal converter, normal harmonics,         non-characteristic harmonics, resonance, filters, special problems.

        Effects of Harmonics: Line notching, line distortion, harmonic instability, effects on         motors, capacitor ratings.

        IEEE 519: What it is, responsibilities of user, responsibility of utility, predicting         compliance, methods of fixing.
